A specter never fully formed yet drenched in blood. If she fails, she dooms her kingdom to a slow demise at the hands of the Rot. Make the Primal of Death fall in love, become his weakness, and then…end him. However, Sera’s real destiny is the most closely guarded secret in all of Lasania-she’s not the well protected Maiden but an assassin with one mission-one target. Chosen before birth to uphold the desperate deal her ancestor struck to save his people, Sera must leave behind her life and offer herself to the Primal of Death as his Consort. I can only hope so.If you know my love for From Blood and Ash it’s no surprise to hear that this is one of my favorite books of 2021.īorn shrouded in the veil of the Primals, a Maiden as the Fates promised, Seraphena Mierel’s future has never been hers. Then again, maybe there are things that happen in this book that will become more important in the following books both series to justify the page count. It just just didn’t need to be a 600+ book to get what we needed to extend the world.

Thankfully, the last 100 pages finally became interesting as we learn more about the other Primals and Gods and the circumstances in which Sera and Nyktos became paired up. Heck, at one point, both Sera and Poppy stab Casteel and Nyktos in the heart. Even their back and forth banter is the same. They both meet their love interest while they are assuming different personas only to reveal who they really are later. Sera, like Poppy was the Maiden and was raised to fight. Sera is so much like Poppy and Nyktos or Ash is so much like Casteel. For most of the book, I felt like I was just rereading From Blood and Ash, the first book in the original series. Other than that I don’t think it’s necessary. I guess it’s good to give more context to world that Poppy and Casteel live in and the history behind so many of the conflicts and relationships. I didn’t enjoy this much as the other books set in the world.
